Meet the Winemaker & Bottle Signing

Meet the winemaker at Shelton Vineyards in Dobson and learn more about the process of making wine. Ethan Brown, a Surry County native, became winemaker last year at Shelton Vineyards, the largest family-owned estate winery in North Carolina.

Brown is a graduate of the winemaking school at nearby Surry Community College. Winery owners Ed and Charlie Shelton helped establish that program years ago after they opened their winery and had to search elsewhere for winemaking talent.

“My start came when the viticulture and enology program at Surry Community College was getting started with seed money from the Sheltons. They were the ones who really spearheaded that program,” Brown said. “Now I’m here at Shelton Vineyards, so everything has come full circle. It’s quite a story.”

Throughout the afternoon, Brown will discuss the growth of the wine industry in North Carolina and what goes into making wine. At 4 p.m., he will lead a behind-the-scenes winery tour. Brown will also personally sign bottles of wine during the event.
