Surry Old Time Fiddlers Convention

The Surry Old Time Fiddlers Convention is an annual event that celebrates Surry County's place as the center of the old time music genre.

The convention draws hundreds of musicians — young and old — who showcase their prowess on stringed instruments while vying for cash prizes in individual and band competitions. Hundreds more turn out to listen to the competitions, take part in workshops, browse luthier displays and participate in dance contests.

Festivities kick off Friday evening with an old-fashioned community dance featuring two well-known old time bands from the region - Slate Mountain Ramblers and Lucas Pasley & The Stratford Stringband

All competitions take place Saturday, including youth, adult and bands. Individual categories include fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, folk song, dance, and fiddle/banjo duets.

Admission is $5 daily, with children 12 and younger admitted at no charge. Contestants get in free Saturday.

Grounded Coffee Co. in Dobson brings snacks and coffee Friday evening, and area food trucks provide a variety of food on Saturday.
