250th Music History Lesson by Ken Bloom
Ken Bloom is a renowned musician, teacher, history enthusiast, and instrument builder (luthier) based in Surry County, North Carolina. He is widely recognized as the foremost expert and luthier for the bowed dulcimer, an instrument he has modified to produce a more melodic, cello-like sound. He constructed a mid-18th-century piece just for this performance. He had not yet had a chance to varnish the instrument before the demonstration but already had a buyer for the unique timepiece. Bloom put on his British Army period garb for us and gave a taste of what kind of music you may have heard 250-ish years ago!

Daniel Boone Cabin at Sugar Creek
Daniel Boone, America's first frontiersman, had a history in what became Surry County, NC. From the time he and his family moved to North Carolina, until he eventually moved farther West out of the state, he was doing something here and in the Yadkin River Valley to provide for his family during his 20+ years here. Take a short trip with us to one of Daniel Boone's cabin sites in modern-day Davie County.
