Surry Ground Steak Trail shines the spotlight on mom-and-pop restaurants that serve this uniquely Surry County creation. Born of necessity in the Great Depression, ground steak sandwiches survived because they are so tasty.

For those unfamiliar, sonker is a cobbler/pie-like dessert of cooked fruit and crust. Many have liquid batter poured on top the fruit. Others have a rolled dough crust, while some are made on stove top with a dropped-dumpling crust.
