Spend a Day Paddling Yadkin Valley Waterways

In Surry County, numerous rivers, creeks and streams provide easy access for a day on the water. The Yadkin Valley’s namesake Yadkin River forms the county’s southern border. The Mitchell River flows on the county’s western side, while the Ararat River lies to the east. Big Elkin Creek travels right through the town of Elkin.

If you’re new to paddling, Kapps Mill Kayak Rentals is located on the Mitchell River with shallow, easy-flowing water. The company offers a 45-minute mini-run for first timers to try out the activity.

Just a few minutes from downtown Elkin, Rocky Forest River Run rents kayaks, canoes and tubes for self-guided trips down the Yadkin River. Choose to paddle for a couple of hours, or as long as six hours. The activity is great for groups. Afterward, journey into downtown Elkin for a glass of Yadkin Valley wine or craft beer and dinner at one of the local restaurants along Main Street.

Head to the historic village of Rockford and join Yadkin River Adventures for a paddle excursion. Choose from two-, four- or six-hour options in a kayak or canoe. True adventurers can extend their trip to an overnight paddle with riverside camping. Rockford General Store, located across from the outfitter, provides snacks, drinks, supplies and full picnic lunches.

Pilot Mountain State Park is one of the jewels of Surry County. Known for its distinctive quartzite knob, the park is also home to a portion of the Yadkin River Canoe Trail. The scenic two miles of river that flow through the park have river birch and sycamore trees along the banks. Two picnic grounds are located about a half-mile from the river shore.

For those who prefer a stroll, the Ararat River Greenway ambles along the riverbank for two miles. It’s a popular stretch for wildlife watching and trout fishing.
